Grade 3 Science Understanding Earth and Space Systems: Soils in the Environment
Below are sites and videos that I will use in class for our Soils in the Environment unit of study. Children are encouraged to review these videos and their notes to ensure understanding.
Learning Goal 3.1: We will identify and describe the different types of soils.
Learning Goal 1.2We will assess the impact of our actions on soils and suggest ways in which we can have positive effects and reduce negative effects of soil. We will learn what soil erosion does, and why this is a negative effect.
Learning Goal 3.2: We will identify additives that might be in soil, but can't always be seen.
ADDITIVES are things that are added to soil, that are not naturally in the soil, to IMPROVE the soil, or to PRESERVE it. Some additives are pesticides, fertilizer, and salt.
Learning Goal 3.3: We will describe the INTERDEPENDENCE between the living and non-living things that make up the soil.
Interdependence means that we DEPEND on each other to survive.
Learning Goal 3.4: We will describe ways that the different parts of the soil help the soil to provide shelter and NUTRIENTS for different kinds of living things.
Learning Goal 2.4: We will investigate the process of composting, and explain some advantages (good things) and disadvantages (bad things) about composting.

Soils in the Environment: Websites Used
LEGO has a great visual activity for students to actually build the different layers of soil. See below for the details.
